Find Schools
Schooling is compulsory in New Zealand from the ages of 6 to 16, however most children begin school soon after their 5th birthday.
|
The school year runs from February to December, with 2-week holidays between each of the 4 terms, and the long summer break over Christmas. Schools are divided into Primary (years 1-6), Intermediate (years 7-8) and Secondary (years 9-13). However, if you live in a rural area the nearest school may be an Area School, which teaches all ages. |
Boarding and private schools in New Zealand are common, but you should be prepared to pay higher fees. Some schools are 'zoned' which means you have to live in within the boundaries of the school zone in order for your child to be eligible to attend a particular school.
New Zealand also has a range of quality early childhood care and education facilities available.
