Get a Tax Number

If you are intending to work in New Zealand, you will need a number from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).

When you start your new job, your employer will give you an IRD form to complete, on which you must fill in your IRD number and tax code. It's a very quick and easy process.

If your income is from salary, wages, benefits or taxable pensions, your tax will automatically be deducted under the PAYE (pay as you earn) system. This means when you get your weekly, fortnightly, or monthly pay, your tax has already been deducted from it.
